Location: Minnesota So a girl friend of mine recently gave over a cat to a temporary foster respite care provider because she was in a not-great financial situation and the living situation didn’t allow for pets, with the understanding it was a temporary arrangement and she was going to get the cat back when she was in a better spot, financially/living wise. She kept in constant contact with the foster provider and asked for regular updates. Things started going sideways though when she requested a picture of the cat. The foster immediately started getting defensive, deleted her own messages and ghosted her. Come to find out the foster was affiliated to a Cat Rescue/Adoption agency and upon receiving the cat she almost immediately turned it over to the adoption agency (without my friend’s consent or knowledge). My friend tried to contact the adoption agency and they simply told her they did the mandatory stray hold and the cat is now their property to adopt out and proceeded to cut all contact off. My understanding is since the cat is microchipped and registered to my friend, the agency needs to, legally, make reasonable attempts at contacting the owner before adopting out (which never happened). Does my friend have any recourse here, legal or otherwise? This whole situation has been a nightmare for my friend.
