I started a lease with someone in September. We were joint approved on our collective income. She works in DHS with MN right now and told me that she has had issues with her paychecks due to the government suspending funding to all DHS programs at the end of the month. She said she is going to look for a more stable job until the DHS situation is figured out, but the burden is temporarily on me to make sure rent is paid.
There isn’t anything in our lease right now that says we explicitly agreed to split the rent 50/50, but we agreed on that since that makes sense. I agreed to sign with her because I assumed her income would be stable. I have enough money to cover our full rent for a few months, but I don’t want to be in a position where I’m paying all of the rent for several months in a row as I don’t have a super lucrative career and am trying to save. I understand times are troubling and I told her that I’ll work to make sure we don’t get evicted, but I just want to make sure that I do eventually get my share back and not end up thousands of dollars short. What should I do right now to make sure I have the best chance of not getting fucked if she can’t get consistent employment?
