Location: Oakland, CA
Long story short, I sublet my apartment (Oakland, CA) - with my landlord’s knowledge / to an individual who paid on time. Two days before he was supposed to leave, we connected about cleaning the place. This morning US Marshals called me saying they have a warrant for his arrest, I was so flustered. I tried to call Friends for legal advice and by the time I tried to call the US marshal back, they already arrested him. Neighbors gave me footage of it. No damage to the property or doors.
The place was a mess when I entered. Just empty liquor bottles and generally dirty.
I don’t know if he still has a key or not but his stuff was still there. Laptops, clothes - I put it all in his suitcase. A public defender told me he could conceivably be released on Bail & come back to the apt.
I’m trying to register for PACER and the local inmate directory to see where he is and what his charges are. Is there anything else I should be doing? Trying to keep it low-key not directly till my landlords only one of my neighbors knows about it.
I can’t change locks without my landlord’s consent which I’d prefer to avoid.
I’m stunned. The Marshal said I might get a call in the next few days either from him or someone working for him to come retrieve his things. How do I know that I’m safe? Anything else I should do?
