Location: Massachusetts. My lease was supposed to start Sept 1. Management company called and advised tenant didn’t vacate on time so there is a delay until sept 5 for me to move in as they need to paint, clean and update kitchen. They didn’t offer to refund me my 4 days of re t. I had to find alternative housing for these days On Thursday they called and advised apt would be ready at 9:30 on Saturday. I didn’t have keys. They asked me to be patient and it would be ready by noon. At 1 pm I reached out. Apt still not ready - kitchen still being worked on. I went over and looked at apt and so dirty it’s not inhabitable and no toilet seat in bathroom. They let me move some of my belongings into a small room so I could get them out of car and run errands (my entire life possessions are in my car)and there was no room to add anything more). They gave me keys but said I could move in until they were done at end of business today. I go back at 6 pm. Property is dead bolted and I don’t have key for deadbolt. I can’t get in. I Finally reach someone and I get in and kitchen not done, bathroom not done and property is filthy. I’m told it will be finished Monday. So I have to get a hotel sat and sun nite. I want the apt but I can’t afford rent for a week that I didn’t use the apt, alternative lodgings and now a hotel on a holiday weekend. What recourse do I have and what is landlord obligated to do.
