I (21F Location: Phoenix AZ) Started a new job this week and I really liked it, the work was easy, pay was bad but it's all I can get due to the job market being in my area the way it is. I had a few red flags starting off with the interview and on my first day of work everything was fine until my GM told me I should probably get a sandwich every day because they take $3 out of my paycheck for every day I work for an employee meal whether I want a sandwich or not. For reference I make state minimum wage, so they would be paying me below minimum wage regardless but it's not below federal minimum wage. I still take issue to this personally because I do not get paid enough for them to be taking my money away from me that I worked for. Besides the point, that was red flag number one. On my second day of work at the end of the day I received an employee contract for me to sign. They said I have to sign it and there is no check boxes to whether or not I consent. I have to agree to all the terms and conditions they listed. One of the terms says and I quote "Due to the high costs of training a new employee each new employee agrees to pay back the training time amount paid to them if they are unable or unwilling to fulfill the minimum 6mo employment post training time." I don't want to sign, it seems sketchy and concerning especially for a big corporation. The store is franchised and that's why I think they have some leeway but I take issue because if I get fired or have to quit for whatever reason it essentially means I'm contractually obligated to stay there regardless of how I feel and my personal situations, otherwise I will have to pay them back. Will they sue me for the money I earned working?
