Falsely accused of shoplifting.

Location: California, USA

Details: My wife and I went to a popular clothing store today. I didn’t go inside, I just hung out in the car so my wife could take her time shopping while I read. A lot of time passed and she wasn’t answering her phone so I worried and went to go look for her inside, but she wasn’t there. I figured she went to the fitting room or the store next door. After some time I went back inside the first store and finally found her…. being escorted out by police.

Alleged crime: The store accused her of adding her own fake sticker with a lower price. The original store sticker should be $49 for these sandals according to them. The “fake” sticker they said my wife put on with the correct model info, serial, and store logo was at $39. They scanned and sold it to her for $39 and stopped her while she walked to the exit, then took her to the security room where they showed a video of her checking out the sandals but no video of her actually adding her own sticker. I couldn’t believe this BS. I’m laughing while pissed and worried about it, because now she has a court date for petty theft. They also banned her from the store for 2 years. They let her keep the sandals so we have the sticker and everything to bring to court. Again, no video evidence of changing stickers. She tried to show the employees the other sandals priced also at $39, but they wouldn’t let her leave the security room.

She is the sweetest, most caring woman. She is a PhD student while working full-time the last 14 years as a Senior Manager at a large pharmaceutical company, and I’m a pilot. Neither of us are risking our livelihood for a gdamn $10 price difference on a pair of sandals. We don’t even know how to print stickers like those! This is all too crazy to me, the fact she has to take work off for court and pay for a lawyer. She is an emotional wreck right now and I’m trying to keep her positive. Does she have a chance to beat this and not face jail time or a record? No criminal history.
