Boyfriend voluntarily committed himself

I wasn't sure where to ask this, because its now been 2 days. The other day my boyfriend had a mental breakdown and called 911, because he wanted to commit suicide. He did it as kind of a last resort while me and the baby were out. He struggles with alcohol and has his entire life. He has told me that he never really feels happy and I know that he has been through a lot of trauma that he has never fully dealt with. The alcohol abuse is a way of curing the thoughts, but he was drinking when he made that call so I'm not sure how helpful that is.... The hospital had him completely change out of his clothes and took away his phone. There is always a nurse on guard but the room is very bare. They won't even let him watch TV and he has no concept of time. He has been evaluated twice and they made the decision to send him to a facility for I believe 2-4 days. However he has been in a pretty much empty emergency room for 2 entire days so far waiting on placement and hes going crazy sitting in there. I feel like that is worse for his mental health. I know he wants to go home, but I told him that we need to make sure hes getting help. I know a huge part of him wants to live and just feel normal. Basically my question is can they indefinitely hold him waiting for placement? I have not been able to get a CLEAR answer. We just miss him and are worried.
